Gonk with the wind
With Christmas just around the corner, everyone at the Art Room got busy making festive decorations and miniature sculptures from card and clay this week.
Our Preschoolers enjoyed decorating their colourful, 3D Christmas tree models and did a fabulous job constructing cheerful, paperchain Santas and Rudolfs.
Having mastered the basics of handling clay – kneading a ball to make it more flexible and rolling it out for a smooth, even finish – the children cut out a variety of Christmassy shapes that they each transformed into tree decorations. Modelling tools, specialist cutters and a good dose of creative flair was used by all to carefully decorate the surface of each piece with intricate patterns, adding individual detail and charm.
Our older artists developed their sculpting techniques further by moulding and joining different pieces of clay to create free-standing models of Yuletide creatures. By the end of the session, a family of Christmas gonks had taken up residence in The Art Room! This Nordic-style gnome, known in Scandinavian mythology for bringing good luck to families that share welcoming hospitality and kindness in their homes, seemed an appropriate mascot with which to celebrate the ambition of our first term of classes!
Next week, when our clay creations have dried and hardened, we will bring them to life by painting them brightly, ready to hang proudly on your Christmas trees at home.
We have one last class next week before the Christmas break. We’d love to welcome everyone back to more exciting activities in the Art Room in the New Year so please do book on now before the holidays, where you’ll find Early Bird discounts for Spring. If you need any help with your booking or have any questions, please drop us an email and we’ll be happy to help.
